Themes represent both the special abilities of a Character and how their capabilities will progress throughout the Story.
When you make a Character, you can either choose three Themes of your choice which are available within the setting of your Story, or you can pick a Trope, which is a pre-selected grouping of three Themes which help deliver a common Character Fantasy.
Benefits
Each Theme will grant you a number of Benefits both when it is acquired and as it is Progressed.
Such Benefits may include such things as gaining additional Experiences, increasing your Ability Bonuses, gaining Resources and uses for those Resources or learning new Actions, Reactions, Combos, Techniques, Spells etc.
The Benefits gained when a Theme is acquired are known as the Starting Benefits of the Theme. Starting Benefits are listed at the bottom of each Theme Card.
Themes are Progressed by expending Experience. See Levelling Up Page for more.
Each time you Progress a Theme, you can choose one Progression Benefit from that Theme. However, in order to gain a Progression Benefit it must be Linked to a previously acquired Benefit of that Theme.
These Links are represented on the Theme Card by white lines which connect the Theme.
The first available Progression Benefits of a Theme are Linked to the Starting Benefits section of the Theme.
Themes often include multiple different Branches, which represent different sets of connected Benefits you can gain from that Theme. When you Progress a Theme, consider what other Benefits you cay gain at later Levels by Progressing it in a particular direction.
Often the more powerful Benefits of a Theme only become available by advancing particular Branches.
Theme Cards
You can track the Benefits gained from a Theme using it’s Theme Card.
We recommend using a highlighter pens or light colored pencils to fill in the White Text and Links between Benefits which have been gained.
If a choice is offered by a Theme for it’s Starting Benefits, you can Track the choice made by filling the Text of the choice you made.
Theme Cards alone will not describe the full Benefits of the Theme, however they will include a QR code which will direct you towards the webpage which describes it’s Benefits in full.
Additional Themes
When you Level Up, instead of Progressing a Themes, you may instead expend Experience to acquire additional Themes. See the Levelling Up Page for more.
You can have no more than 6 Themes in total.
Gaining Additional Themes can grant your Character a more diverse set of powerful abilities, or grant Benefits which complement those of other Themes. However taking additional Themes will delay the Progress of your other Themes.
Common Benefits
Generally the Benefits of a Theme are described in full by it’s Page. The exceptions to this are the following Common Benefits, whose effects are self-explanatory from their Title alone.
Common Benefit | Effect |
Skill Benefits | If a Benefit has the text of a Skill (i.e. Athletics, Creativity, Lore, Medical, Social, Survival, Technology or Trickery) you become Skilled in that Skill. If you already have that Skill (or a Benefit which grants that Skill), treat the Benefit as instead granting the HP+10 Benefit (see Obsolete Benefits below). |
Resource +1 Benefits | If a Benefit has the text of a Resource (Stamina, Drive, Mana or Favor) followed by “+1” you gain one additional point of that Resource. Each time you gain this Benefit, increase the Resource by an additional Point. |
Ability Bonus +1 Benefits | If a Benefit has the text of an Ability Bonuses (MIG, DEX, FOC, CHA, Skill or Speed) followed by “+1”, you gain one additional point of that Resource. Each time you gain this Benefit, increase the Resource by an additional Point. |
HP +10 | If a Benefit has the text of HP +10, you gain 10 additional Hit Points. Each time you gain this Benefit, increase your Hit Points by an additional 10 Points. |
Obsolete Benefits
In some cases a Benefit you gain may provide no Benefit to your Character.
There are many possible examples of this, you could pick a Skill Benefit when you already have that Skill. The same Benefit could appear in multiple Themes (such Benefits will have identical Names), or the effects granted by a Benefit are made redundant by the effects of another benefit.
In such cases, the Benefit is regarded as “Obsolete“.
If a Benefit you gain is Obsolete, or one you previously gained becomes Obsolete, treat the Benefit as instead granting you the HP +10 Benefit.
If it is unclear whether a Benefit is Obsolete or not, discuss with your GM. At their discretion they can choose whether the Benefit should be regarded as Obsolete or not.
Themes
Below are lists of available Themes as well as a short description of each of them.
For ease of viewing, they are divided into 2 different lists: Ability Themes and Combat Themes.
Combat Themes
Combat Themes specifically improve your abilities in Combat. In particular, your ability to use certain categories of weapons, and granting you Combos and Techniques which you can use to cause devastating effects on enemies.
