Tools represent Objects which you may use in order to make relevant Skill Checks easier.
Usage
Using Tools you are Skilled in as part of a Skill Check will allow you to add your Skill Bonus to it’s Result.
To use a Tool, the set of Tools must be somewhere in your possession (i.e. in an Equipment Slot) or in a Space Adjacent to you. Additionally you must have at least one Free Hand with which to interact with the Tools.
If you are already able to add your Skill Bonus to the Check (i.e. you are also Skilled in the Skill being used) you instead will have Advantage on the Check.
You do not need to be Skilled in Tools in order to use them (for some Checks such Tools might be necessary), but using Tools you are not Skilled in will cause the Check to have Disadvantage.
While some Tools may be less useful during certain Stories, such Tools may be of benefit during Downtime Work Activities. See the Downtime Page for more.
Tool Options
The types of Tools available may vary between Fantasy. Additionally, while a wide range of different examples are provided below, Groups may create their own sets of Tools also.
The examples presented below are intended to give Groups an idea of the scope of activities which tools might cover, as well as the kinds of activities and courses of actions they may contribute to.
All sets of Tools have a Cost of 10 Credits, irrespective of what they may be used for.
Brewing Tools
These Tools may be used to craft a range Brewed and Fermented food items, and also make potable water and edible food when it may otherwise be difficult to come by (such as when you are away from settlements), as well as maintain them as safe to eat in the long term.
Includes various glass vials, corks, fermentation agents and pumps consistent with the making of Brewed and Fermented Goods.
Calligraphy Tools
Used when making beautiful handwritten notes. While you are assumed to be able to write in languages you understand, these Tools may be used to craft written documents which are designed to impress the reader.
Includes various inks, quills or pens, fine parchment and paper, as well as wax and blank seal stamps for creating sealed documents.
Cartography Tools
Used when making accurate and detailed maps.
When traversing an area, you may use Cartography Tools to craft detailed maps of it. Such Maps may be used in future exploration of those areas to assist in their traversal (e.g. grant Advantage on Checks to navigate them). Such Maps may also be copied using cartography tools.
Includes various inks, pens, paper or parchment, map cases, stencils and measurement instruments required for the creation of Maps.
Chemistry Tools
Used for making poisons, medicines, solvents and testing substances using principles of Chemistry.
Chemistry Tools may be used for a great range of different applications. It may be used to justify the making of many different forms of solution as well as for testing the properties of objects.
Includes various glass vials and stoppers, solvents, reactants, stirring implements and a portable heat source.
Climbing Tools
Used to assist in safely scaling steep or vertical surfaces.
Such Tools may be used to climb surfaces which could not otherwise be climbed by Characters who lack this Tool Skill, however those who are Skilled in them gain it’s additional benefits (i.e. adding your Skill Bonus to the Check).
Includes various gear for climbing including ropes, pitons, harnesses and a helmet.
Cobbling Tools
Used for the making of and repair of footwear.
They say an army marches on it’s stomach, but the Cobbler understands it’s actually their feet. During long travels on foot, a set of Cobbler’s Tools are essential in ensuring that people are able to march on in comfort. They also allow Characters to craft their own footwear, and may as part of a Downtime Project be used to make Accessories for being worn on Feet.
Includes various needles and threads, spare parts, Casts and measurement instruments necessary for the repair and creation of footwear.
Cooking Tools
Used for the preparing of cooked foods. The ability to cook can be essential to the long term health and comfort of Characters, as well as a marketable skill in itself. Using Cooking Tools can in the immediate term help make safe food and water which may not be so.
Includes various small knives, pans, oils and spices necessary for the preparation of Cooked Foods.
Disguise Tools
Used for the making of costumes and disguises. The ability to create a convincing disguise may be necessary to passing without notice, or in some cases convincing others you are someone else entirely.
Includes various putties, makeup, wigs and false beards and moustaches, as well as an alternative change of clothing. New disguises may be created by expending Supplies.
Dressmaking Tools
Used for the repair of and making of clothing. Dressmaking Tools allow you to craft their own clothing, and may as part of a Downtime Project be used to make Accessories for being worn on the body.
Includes various spare pieces of fabric, needles, thread, a small iron and mold for pressing and measuring instruments. Fabric for adapting garments may be acquired by expending Supplies.
Electronics Tools
Used for the repair, adjustment and making of electronic circuitry. The ability to understand and adjust electronics can be a useful Skill in Modern and Futuristic settings, where such technology may appear frequently.
Electronics Tools allow you to craft your own electronics based pieces of equipment, and may as part of a Downtime Project be used to make a wide range of equipment and gadgetry which rely on electronics.
Includes various wires and other spare electronic components, electrical measurement instruments, solder and iron.
Forgery Tools
Used for the replication and alteration of documents and evidence, as well as the detection of such tricks.
The ability to perform and detect Forgery can be a useful Skill, particularly when being able to rely upon the veracity of documents and evidence is a central part of a Story.
Includes a range of different inks, pens and papers, tools for the tracing of writing, a notebook for the copying samples of Character’s handwritten notes, and a small magnifying glass or Jeweler’s loupe for the close inspection of fine details.
Glassblowing Tools
Used for the creation, mending and alteration of glass objects, including windows and glass vessels, as well as fine pieces of art.
Glassblowing represents a rare specialist Skill which few possess, but is necessary for the crafting of such specialist objects. These Tools may, in addition to the craft and mending of such Objects, be used for the cutting of glass, allowing you to enter through windows without raising alarm.
Includes a range of sands, a crucible, glassblowing instruments as well as scribes, engraving tools and cutting tools for use on Glass.
Healing Tools
Used for diagnosing diseases and other ailments, as well as in healing.
These Tools may be used as part of Medicine Skill Checks to Heal Characters, allowing the Check to use the Characters Skill or, if the Character is Skilled in Medicine, allow them to make the Check with Advantage. See the Damage, Wounds and Healing Page for more.
Includes medical instruments such as scalpels, a journal describing a number of common ailments and treatment methods, stethoscope, needles and thread, splints, needles and vials.
Herbalism Tools
Used for the collecting of and use of herbs in a range of applications, including the making of salves, antidotes, pain relieve, poisons and narcotics.
Such Tools might be used for making a range of consumable items associated with the above applications, provided the Character has access to the relevant Herbs, which might be purchased or sought out in the wild.
Includes cutting implements, a note book to help identify a range of known herbs, pestle and mortar, vials and reagents.
Jeweler’s Tools
Used for the cutting, polishing and identification of precious gemstones and metals, as well as their craft into new art pieces.
Such Tools may be used to create your own jewelry, mend or improve damaged pieces, or identify the value of such pieces.
Includes tools for cutting gemstones (fine chisels, engraving tools, files), a Jeweler’s Loupe, a small crucible and simple molds for metal craft, and a notebook for the identification of and expected sale values of known precious gemstones and metals.
Leatherworking Tools
Used for the crafting, repair and care of all products which use leather.
Such Tools may be used to create your own leather based armor, saddlery and bags, as well as making leather from animal skins.
Includes tools for cutting, pressing, stitching and punching holes in leather (chisels, knives, needles) as well as skinning knives and various agents used in the tanning process (salt, lime, tannin). Tanning can itself be a slow process taking a number of days, but rewarding particularly if used for the preparation of Monster leathers which may retain some of their inherent properties.
Masonry Tools
Used for the crafting, repair and identification of stonework and brickwork.
Such Tools may be used to assist in long term Projects of making buildings, or during exploration to identify the presence of secret passageways and traps concealed in wall.
Includes tools such as chisels, picks, spirit levels, trowels and basic components for repairing damaged stonework.
Musical Instruments
Used for the performing music.
Musical Instruments are many and varied, but in all cases may be used to assist in musical performances. These may be as part of a song, but also may be used to accompany theatrical performances or dance.
For musicians interested in only performing via song, they may consider alternative implements which would support their singing, such as a microphone, or a diary which includes their songwriting notes.
A Musical Instrument will include the instrument itself, as well as tools for the proper care and tuning of that instrument.
Navigation Tools
Used for the navigation during journeys.
Navigation tools are especially useful in way finding and expeditions. They may assist in identifying a persons location and direction from the stars, the plotting of courses, and the prediction of fair weather.
Navigation tools will include a compass, rules, sextants and a barometer.
Optical Tools
Used for the the manipulation of light.
Optical tools are useful for a range of applications which include the manipulation of light. From creating projection systems and specialist lighting, to spectacles and binoculars to laser weapons.
Optical tools will include a range of lens, as well as tools for the polishing and cutting of lenses, and filters.
Painting Tools
Used for the creation of art by means of painting.
Painting Tools are useful for capturing the image of things, as well as producing images with artistic merit which may inspire others.
Painting Tools will include paints, brushes, canvas and framing materials.
Pottery Tools
Used for the creation of vessels and art pieces out of clay pottery.
Pottery is useful for both the practical purposes of creating containers as well as the creation of fine pieces of art.
Pottery Tools will include paints, brushes, canvas and framing materials.
Riding
Riding represents your ability to ride creatures exceptionally well, as well as care for and maintain them.
While it may be assumed that all Player Characters in a setting may interact with and Mount willing creatures, those who are Skilled in Riding are exceptionally capable with this activity.
Unlike Vehicles, Riding may be used in any activity where you are riding a mount, from horses to dragons.
In addition to being more capable of riding such creatures, you will be able to use this Skill in the craft, repair and maintaining of saddles and harnesses, and also to interact with animals who you have previously interacted with as a rider.
Smithy Tools
Used for the creation, repair and maintaining of metal work, including metal tools, weapons and armor.
The ability to forge your own weapons, tool and armor are a common fantasy, particularly within traditional fantasy. Smithy Tools allow you to make your own equipment, and my be used as parts of projects to create things which may be otherwise difficult to come by.
Without a full smithy you may find yourself limited in what can be achieved, but these tools may allow you to perform smaller jobs in a pinch, such as repairs and maintenance or the creation of smaller tools (e.g. daggers).
Smithy Tools will include a portable crucible and bellows, hammers and grindstones.
Thievery Tools
Used for a range of tricks of the trade of burglary and breaking and entering.
The most common use of thievery tools may be in the use of picking locks, which may be used to gain access to rooms and containers you might otherwise be unable to. They are also often used in the detection of defenses against thieves, such as the detection and disarming of common traps.
Thievery Tools will include a set of lockpicks, crowbar, a small mirror and cutting tools.
Tinkering Tools
Used for the crafting, repairing and maintaining of mechanical gadgetry, as well as interacting with mechanical devices.
Tinkering tools will allow you to create and maintain a range of different mechanical objects, from clock mechanisms to vehicles. They may also in a pinch be used to interact with mechanical objects such as locks.
Tinkering Tools will include a set of screwdrivers, wrenches, metal files various small mechanical components such as nuts, bolts, washers and springs.
Vehicles (Sea, Land or Air)
Vehicles represent your ability to handle specific classes of vehicles exceptionally well.
When you choose this Tool Skill, you must pick a specific class of vehicle (Sea, Land or Air). Sea vehicles will include any sea going vessels, from canoes to galleons. Land vehicles may likewise include any wheeled vehicle from bicycles and snow mobiles to 4×4 vehicles. Air vehicles meanwhile may include any vehicle which may move through air or even space.
While it may be assumed that all Player Characters in a setting may interact with such vehicles, those who are Skilled may be exceptionally capable with them. They might be sailors of the high seas, pilots of a galactic resistance force, or members of a ring of illegal street racers. Having this Skill will allow you to add your Skill Bonus to any Skill Check to handle or control these vehicles.
If you are interested in the the the making, repair and maintenance of such vehicles you may wish to also be Skilled in Tools designed their maintenance (Woodcarving Tools for Ships, Tinkering Tools for Land and Air Vehicles).
Woodcarving Tools
Used for the crafting, repairing and maintaining of products made of wood.
Woodcarving tools will allow you to create and repair such objects as furniture and vehicles with wooden structures as well as wooden weapons and shields. They may also be used in interacting with wooden objects such as doors, chests and structures.
Unlike metal working, wood working is much more possible to be accomplished away from a workshop (though a workshop will undoubtedly open up more possibilities). Consequently making new pieces of equipment such as shields and weapons may be possible in a pinch with these tools.
Woodcarving Tools will include a hacksaws, sanding tools, drills, hammers and chisels.
