Brute

The Brute represents Characters in fiction who rely on raw strength and recklessness to accomplish their goals. They appear in a range of fictional works, including the Conan the Barbarian, The Incredible Hulk and some iterations of Ganon from the Legend of Zelda series, as well as in famously strong Characters from ancient legends such as Heracles, Samson and Gilgamesh.

Prologue

You begin your Story as a Brute with an exceptionally high Damage Limit of 12, which increases by 7 for each Level of Brute taken. You are naturally Athletic, allowing you to overcome physical obstacles. You are Trained in all Weapons, and most Armor (although many Brutes prefer to rely on their natural endurance). You are adept at resisting effects with your Strength and Endurance.

Starting Ability Bonuses

We recommend Characters with the Brute Role have high Strength and Endurance Bonuses.

You may Choose your own Ability Bonuses or use one of the following Example Ability Bonus Arrays.

You can choose an Example Ability Bonus Array by rolling a d6 and choosing the corresponding Array.

All Example Arrays assume the Character is Heroic for the purposes of how many points they have.

Light Fantasy

In the early parts of your story, you gain many abilities iconic to the Brute, such as the Brute’s Rage, their Tough Skin, and the ability to Attack Recklessly.

Additionally from Level 2 you gain the Instincts feature, which allows you to choose from a range of features which explore how your Instincts as a Brute manifest themselves.

Finally at Level 5 you gain the ability to Attack multiple times per a Turn, and also the ability to Frighten Characters near you with your Intimidating Presence.

Stamina

You gain a resource called Stamina, which you can spend in order to use powerful physical abilities, such as the Brute’s Rage feature.

When you gain this feature, you have two Stamina Points.

You regain all your Stamina when you finish either a Long or Short Rest.

The maximum number of Stamina Points you have increases whenever you gain the Additional Stamina feature. The Stamina you will have as a Brute is shown in the below Table:

Rage

As a Minor Action, you may spend Stamina to enter a Rage filled State.

The duration you may remain in this state for depends on how many Stamina points you spend when you enter into it:

  • One Stamina Point: The state lasts until the Start of your Next Turn.
  • Two Stamina Points: The state lasts for up to one Minute.
  • Three Stamina Points: The state lasts for up to ten Minutes.

This State ends early if you are Incapacitated or you choose to end it (no Action required).

While in this State you gain the following benefits:

  • You have Resistance to Physical Forms of Damage (Slashing, Piercing and Bludgeoning).
    • You lose this benefit while you are wearing Difficult or Heavy Armor.
  • Attacks which use Strength for their Attack Bonus deal Additional Damage equal to one roll of your Martial Die.
  • You have Advantage on any Physical Defense Rolls you make.

While your Rage is in effect, you cannot maintain use or maintain Effects (such as certain Spells and Martial Stances) which require Concentration. You cannot begin a Short or Long Rest while you are in a Rage.

Tough-Skinned

While you are not wearing Restrictive Armor, your minimum Armor Class can be determined as follows:

Armor Class = 8 + Dexterity Bonus + Endurance Bonus

You may add the AC bonus of a Shield to this Armor Class as well as Armor Class bonuses granted by magical effects, including those from Armor you are currently wearing.

Martial Die

At Level 1 your Martial Die is a d4.

This die represents your Character’s ability to push themselves past their normal limits to achieve their goals.

At levels 5, 9, 13 and 17, the Improved Martial Die feature increases the die size to a d6, a d8, a d10 and a d12 respectively.

If you gain the Improved Martial Die feature from another Role, increase the Martial Die by one size category, up to a maximum size of a d12.

Save DC

Some features of the Brute Role (such as the Brute’s Intimidating Presence) require a Character make a Defense Roll to resist it’s effects.

The Brute uses their impressive Endurance to their advantage, consequently their Save DC is given by:

Brute Save DC = 8 + Skill Bonus + Endurance Bonus
